Gentlemen…
Filed under Copypasta |Gentlemen, I like VLC.
Gentlemen, I like VLC.
Gentlemen, I love VLC!
I like AVI, I like RMVB,
I like 120fps, I like interlacing,
I like rainbowing, I like the dot crawl, I like blocking.
I like the ringing, and I like tiny audio.
On a computer, a DVD player, a PS3, on a Mac, on an Archos.
I truly love each and every kind of artifact man can encode to a file.
I like the broken ASS support when even the simplest of lines fails to render correctly. When the translator’s notes overlaps the main dialogue, it makes my heart dance!
I like when an encode displays like it is corrupted! It always left a warm feeling in my chest when they would check the CRC, only to find it is correct.
I like it when #darkhold encoders post on AnimeSuki and RAGE about the topic at hand. I recall how much it moved me, seeing how epic longposts were made, how they would shun the subject again and again, even though it wouldn’t die. And it’s painfully exciting when a leecher posts about how great it is in the same thread.
And how wonderful it is to have 120fps for a show that is a constant 23.976!
And that pitiful resistance, encoding to h264, despite it being harder on the CPU. I even remember when XviD had a 10:1 leecher ratio!
I like it when the MKV fanboys are thrown into chaos. And when the VFR feature they are supposed to be promoting is violated repeatedly… oh how very sad it is.
I like it when the detail and sharpness in HD encodes are crushed and obliterated! And them being filtered, smearing and ghosting and looking worse than a standard DVD.
Gentlemen, what I want is a low bitrate hell.
Gentlemen, my compatriots, leechers, you who abuse my XDCC bots… gentlemen, what do you desire? Do you also want eyecancer? Is a return to the age of VCDs what you want?
Do you yearn for a VHS encode that stretches the very limits of poor quality, the artifacts so intense that it makes Stevie Wonder cringe?
Very well then, we shall have VLC.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron
Filed under Life |After the GRUBby death of my Ubuntu 7.10 (multi-booted with Windows XP), I let the idea of dual-booting my laptop simmer down for a while. Then time flew by and without me knowing it, Ubuntu 8.04 is here. Boy, I sure am delighted.
Since I already partitioned my hard disk for the older Ubuntu installation, I just reformatted the relevant partitions that were left over - root, swap and home - leaving the NTFS partitions intact and untouched, except the MBR.

Here we are, at the Desktop of Hardy Heron itself (punnily called ‘Hairy Hardon’). I didn’t have to download the graphic drivers first in order to have widescreen functionality. HH automatically detects and did whatever it needed to do in order for me to have a 16:10 desktop.

Not really. You see, using a generic driver for graphics when you have the hardware and the specific Linux drivers is like driving a car with wooden wheels - just because it works doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get something better. In this case, installing the specific drivers is far more useful than using the generic driver. Unfortunately, Debian’s philosophy sometimes means things can get a little bit complicated. In this case, restricted drivers. Fortunately, installation is just a matter of ticking the checkbox and wait for the driver to be downloaded. Restart, and you are now using the driver meant for the hardware.

Obviously, the first thing one usually does after installation, be it a program or an operating system, is to check for updates. Ubuntu automatically does this, and if there’s any updates to download it will notify the user with a small reminder in the area-next-to-the-clock-which-name-I-have-forgotten.

I can’t really like the default theme, so I changed it to something more minimal by going to System -> Preferences -> Appearance. I feel that most people will be confused between Preferences and Administration - it’s almost similar.

And yes, the desktop background must go to. Though I must say I was lacking in choice when I chose this particular background - got it off /wg/ from 4chan.

And finally, installation of the restricted extras. This is necessary to enable Flash, Java, MP3 playback and a variety of other things. Debian being Debian, this was not installed by default (due to copyright restrictions). A small dialog box prompting the user to install this package when they do something that requires it would’ve been nice…
So how was it? So far it has been a smooth ride. Now, off to edit GRUB to make Windows my default boot ;)

Steel toe cap FTW.

You know you have too many boots when you don’t have a place for them all… (not pictured: parade boots with hobnails)
